SAYT presents Disney’s Descendants: The Musical November 4-6 2021
With a cast of 60 local youth ages 5-13, Superior Arts Youth Theater (SAYT) will present Disney’s Descendants: The Musical at Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre, November 4-6, 2021. Based on the popular Disney Channel Original Movies, Descendants is a musical comedy featuring the beloved characters and hit songs from the films. SAYT’s production is directed by Jalina McClain, with music direction by Caitlin Palomaki and choreography by Emily Burbey. The production is stage managed by Emily Kendall.
The story is set in the kingdom of Auradon, where Disney’s heroes are living happily ever after, safe from the terrifying villains they have banished to the magic-free Isle of Lost. That is until Ben (Nate Wood), the benevolent teenage son of Belle (Torah Brindle) and King Beast (Eli Spencer), offers a chance of redemption for the troublemaking offspring of the evilest villains. Mal (Reya Ghiardi), Evie (Remi Johnson), Jay (Jack Johnson), and Carlos (Lukas Barron) – the children of Maleficent (Larkyn Stucko), the Evil Queen Grimhilde (Berkeley Thompson), Cruella De Vil (Dahlia Bloch), and Jafar (Caleb Rayhorn) – are welcomed to Auradon Prep to attend school with the children of their parents’ sworn enemies. Now entering a completely foreign world and way of life, the four Villain Kids have to decide whether they should follow in their parents’ footsteps or learn to be good.
A sensory-friendly performance of Descendants will be presented on Saturday, November 6 at 1:00pm. This performance is open to any patron who would like to see the production and is designed to create a welcoming and supportive environment for children and adults diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder or other sensory sensitivities. Adjustments to the production include the option to get out of your seat and move around freely, reduction of any jarring sounds or strobe and spotlights that shine into the audience, dim house lights that remain on during the performance, and quiet and activity areas in the lobby for those who need to leave their seats during the performance.
The four performances of Descendants will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, November 4; 7 p.m. Friday, November 5; 1 p.m. sensory-friendly performance Saturday, November 6; and 7 p.m. Saturday, November 6 at Northern Michigan University’s Forest Roberts Theatre. NMU Policy states that facemasks must be worn, regardless of vaccination status, in all university buildings. This includes the Forest Roberts Theatre. Tickets are on sale now: $15 for adults and $9 for students. Tickets purchased at the door will be $2.00 more ($17 for adults and $11 for students). Tickets are available online at tickets.nmu.edu (with a print at home option), by phone at 906-227-1032 or in person at any NMU ticketing outlet, including the Berry Events Center, University Bookstore, Superior Dome or the Forest Roberts Theatre.
