It’s back baby! Last year’s Heikki Lunta event got put on ice due to Covid but 2022 brings the premiere winter event back and better than ever. “Heikki Lunta” presented by Travel Marquette, WJMN, The Compound Ski and Snowboard Shop, and Negaunee’s DDA is scheduled for January 28 and 29, 2022. The event is also sponsored by Eagle Mine, NMU, OK Industrial, and The Fire Station.
The weekend will bring back some of the favorites from the traditional festival together with some new and exciting events including the inaugural Irontown Rail Jam and Snowboard competition. The weekend will kick-off with at 5 p.m. with the lighting of the traditional bonfire at Tobin and Iron Street. Spectators won’t want to miss the excitement of the Irontown Rail Jam Competition as snowboarders and skiers display their tricks and turns starting at 5:30 pm. Friday night also includes activities at the UP Luge Club, Lantern Snowshoe Tours of Old Town, a stroll through the Tunnel of Lights, and specials and treats featured by local restaurants and pubs. Saturday’s events start at 7 a.m. with the South Shore Fishing Association’s Teal Lake Ice Fishing Tournament. Catch breakfast at the Elks Club at 107 N. Pioneer Street then take in activities at both the UP Luge Club and the Ishpeming Ski Club sites. Restaurants and pubs will be open serving great food and drink all day. Evening snowshoe lantern tours of Old Town will again be available and ????????? the events will be a thrilling SnowCross Race. Closing out the weekend the crowd will be treated to a winter firework display presented in part by Jackson’s Pit Grill & Bar.

Registration is now open for the Downtown Showdown Rail Jam! Fans and competitors gather as the event brings the excitement of the ski hill to the historic streets of Downtown Negaunee on Friday, January 28, 2022.

Cash prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place in the competitive men’s ski and snowboard jams, and awarded for first and second place in the competitive women’s ski and snowboard jams. Additional prizes will be drawn throughout the event.

Cash prizes and high fives! The inaugural Irontown Rail Jam is Friday night, January 28, 2022, in Downtown Negaunee – between Iron and Rail Streets of course. Presented by Travel Marquette, WJMN, The Compound Ski & Snowboard Shop and Negaunee’s DDA the event kicks-off the “Heikki Lunta” winter weekend festival. The street style showdown starts at 5:30 pm with open jibbing earlier. The fee to ride $20 and all riders must wear a helmet and sign a waiver (parental signature if under 18). Come out and make some loot, get some swag, or just slide some metal.
