West End Suicide Prevention Announces Winter Events Schedule February 3 2022

West End Suicide Prevention is excited to announce three winter events that will support suicide prevention and the LIVE Campaign, a positive mental health campaign encouraging self-care and compassion in our communities.

The 2022 LIVE Snowman Building Contest is now accepting entries until March 11th. Entries are open to people of all ages across the Upper Peninsula of Michigan with one lucky person winning a $100 Visa Gift Card. The 2022 LIVE Snowman Contest is intended to bring people outside to enjoy physical activities during the cold winter months, as well as bring awareness to the LIVE campaign. Studies have shown that both being outdoors and taking part in physical activities helps to improve your mental health. The snowmen will be voted on both via Facebook and at the Beating the Winter Blues Health Fair that will take place on March 20th. Find the official rules at www.glrc.org/snowmancontest.

Silent Snow Sports for Suicide Prevention is a virtual winter outdoor activity event to raise awareness for suicide prevention and the LIVE Campaign, with proceeds benefiting West End Suicide Prevention. All registered participants will receive a free LIVE neck gaiter and those registered participants that submit photos to wesp@greatlakesrecovery.org will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Downwind Sports gift card. Silent Snow Sports for Suicide Prevention encourages people to get outside and participate in aerobic activities and maybe try a new one. When combining aerobic activities with the outdoors, a person experiences the interaction of exercise and the benefits of being in the natural sunlight and clean outdoor air. Additionally, trying new recreational pursuits can have an added benefit on your mental health, as developing new skills can help one experience a sense of lifelong learning and a level of mastery. This event is open to all silent snow sports such as skiing, snow biking, ice skating and more. Register at www.runsignup.com/Race/MI/Ishpeming/WESP .

Finally, the Beating the Winter Blues Health Fair will take place on Sunday, March 20th at Westwood High School in Ishpeming. This is a unique health fair on the west end of Marquette County and will feature health screenings, Blender Bikes, a prescription drug take back box, and a variety of agencies sharing information about the services they offer. There will also be games and participants will have the opportunity to vote on their favorite snowman in the 2022 LIVE Snowman Contest. Agencies can register a table for the event until March 11th. Sponsorship opportunities are still available to learn how contact apoirier@greatlakesrecovery.org or call (906) 523-9688.

West End Suicide Prevention is a diverse group of individuals dedicated to helping to prevent suicide and facilitated by Great Lakes Recovery Centers. The group developed the LIVE (rhymes with ‘give’) campaign in 2019 as a way to encourage people to LOVE (yourself), INCLUDE (others), VALUE (life) and ENGAGE (community).

For more information about any of these events, contact Amy Poirier at apoirier@greatlakesrecovery.org or (906) 523-9688.
